1. Jesus the Christ by James E. Talmage
A doctrinal study on the life and ministry of Christ, and is a widely appreciated document among Latter-day Saints. The book consists of 42 chapters, each focusing on important aspects of the life and mission of Jesus as the Messiah.
Since it was first published in September 1915, Jesus the Christ has been viewed by the LDS church as a classic text on the LDS church’s teachings and beliefs concerning the life and ministry of Jesus. Elder Marion G. Romney said, “One who gets the understanding, the vision, and the spirit of the resurrected Lord through a careful study of the text Jesus the Christ by Elder James E. Talmage will find that he has greatly increased his moving faith in our glorified Redeemer.”
In his preface to the first edition, Elder Talmage wrote: “The author has departed from the course usually followed by writers on the Life of Jesus Christ, which course, as a rule, begins with the birth of Mary’s Babe and ends with the ascension of the slain and risen Lord from Olivet. The treatment embodied in these pages, in addition to the narrative of the Lord’s life in the flesh, comprises the antemortal existence and activities of the world’s Redeemer, the revelations and personal manifestations of the glorified and exalted Son of God during the apostolic period of old and in modern times, the assured nearness of the Lord’s second advent, and predicted events beyond-all so far as the Holy Scriptures make it plain.
“It is particularly congruous and appropriate that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints-the only Church that affirms authority based on specific revelation and commission to use the Lord’s Holy Name as a distinctive designation-should set forth her doctrines concerning the Messiah and His mission.”

3. Believing Christ by Stephen E. Robinson
Author Stephen Robinson illustrates the power of the Savior as he uses analogies and parables, such as his own bicycle story, and scriptures and personal experiences in this moving, best-selling book. “Mortals have finite liabilities,” he explains, “and Jesus has unlimited assets.” By merging the two, exaltation can come. As long as we progress in some degree, the Lord will be pleased and will bless us. We must not only believe in Christ but also believe him — believe that he has the power to exalt us, that he can do what he claims. People will better understand the doctrines of mercy, justification, and salvation by grace after reading this book.

4. Following Christ by Stephen E. Robinson
The groundbreaking book Believing Christ by Stephen Robinson has become a standard in understanding what it means to have faith in Jesus Christ and to be justified by faith in Him through the gospel covenant. Now, in Following Christ: The Parable of the Divers and More Good News, Brother Robinson explains what happens after we have entered the gospel covenant. He writes, “Where Believing Christ dealt with entering the covenant, this book will focus on staying in the covenant. If being truly converted is to accept Christ as Lord and to make Him the Lord of our lives, then this must somehow be reflected in our lives — but how? How does being born again translate into behavior after our conversion?”
In the same clear, readable style of his first book, Brother Robinson explains what is means to be a member of Christ’s kingdom, the relationship between faith and works, what it means to endure to the end (it does not mean “being perfect”), the nature of mortality, hazards we may encounter as we seek to endure in the Lord’s service, and, finally, the importance of serving others in love.

5. His Holy Name by Dallin H. Oaks
The name of Jesus Christ is woven through the fabric of our religious life. It is invoked daily in prayers, blessings, ordinances, and testimonies of members of the Church throughout the world. Apostles serve as “special witnesses of the name of Christ in all the world.” But what does it mean to be a witness not just of Jesus Christ, but also of His name? In His Holy Name, Elder Dallin H. Oaks explores the significance of the scriptural references to the name of Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world.
Using personal insight and excerpts from the standard works, Elder Oaks takes a fascinating look at the meaning of the Savior’s holy name in our worship and beliefs. Truly, His holy name is a vital portion of our understanding and faith in the restored gospel. Elder Oaks recounts the words of John: “But these are written, that ye might belive that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name” (John 20:31). and, explains this modern-day Apostle, “In this context, ‘his name’ means His work and His plan of salvation with all of its glorious provisions for the children of God.”
